When attendance changes, start with the number of skaters available, excluding goalies. The examples below are starting structures for standard five-skater full-ice hockey, not universal rules. Age group, game format, player experience, and program expectations should guide the final plan.
Possible starting structures

These splits do not guarantee equal individual ice time
With eight forwards and four defense players, three of eight forwards are on the ice while two of four defense players are on. Alternating groups evenly therefore does not by itself give everyone the same playing time. Review individual opportunities and adjust roles or rotations according to your program.
Other splits may suit a particular roster. Consider player readiness and role flexibility rather than treating the table as the only valid lineup.
Make the odd-player plan explicit
Tell assistants who fills the extra spot and what happens after each change. Avoid an undefined floater who accidentally takes consecutive turns or repeatedly misses one. If a player leaves the game, stop and clarify the new sequence.
Keep the digital and coaching jobs separate
