Stop Handwriting Hockey Lineups: A Practical iPhone and iPad Workflow

Master-Your-Hockey-Lineup

Updated October 15, 2026. This guide reflects the current native iPhone and iPad workflow.

The biggest benefit of a digital lineup is not making a paper sheet look better. It is having a reliable starting point when attendance, positions, or game plans change. In Hockey Lineup Manager, that workflow happens in the native iPhone and iPad app.

Build once, adapt for the game

Save your team roster, then create the lineup for a specific opponent and date. Arrange forwards, defense pairs, and goalies with the players who are actually available. Reopen a saved game plan when the structure is useful again, but review it before reusing it.

Avoid saving several versions with nearly identical names and no date. Give your staff one current lineup so they do not make decisions from an outdated printout.

Prepare for the common changes

  • A player is absent: remove them from the game plan and decide who fills the role.
  • Someone arrives late: agree on how they rejoin before changing the bench order.
  • A goalie assignment changes: communicate it separately rather than assuming the PDF explains the decision.
  • You adjust a line: update the document shared with assistants.

Use the right tool during play

Lineup Manager organizes positions and line combinations. Cross-Ice Rotation manages a different workflow involving shifts, player availability, and the next rotation. Choose the tool that matches the game format rather than treating a printed lineup as automatic shift management.

Keep a clear shared reference

Export the finished lineup as a PDF and use the app’s supported sharing options. Assistants can read a shared PDF without needing the same editable app data. A PDF copy is not a live, synchronized coaching dashboard.

If you also need roster labels, use the separate Scoresheet Stickers tool inside HLM. It remains free without Pro; the lineup workflow has its own access requirements.

Get the current iPhone and iPad app

Hockey Lineup Manager is free to download for iPhone and iPad. Scoresheet Stickers do not require a Pro subscription; advanced coaching tools are offered through Pro. Check the App Store and in-app purchase screen for current pricing and access details.

View Hockey Lineup Manager on the App Store, or explore its coaching tools. This article describes the native iOS app, not the former browser-based workflow.
