A practice-planning app should help you run the next session, not just collect drills. This guide replaces an old ranked app list with seven practical checks for coaches evaluating an iPhone or iPad workflow.
1. A plan with visible timing
Put a duration beside each segment and check the total against your actual ice slot. Include transitions and explanations rather than filling every minute with skating time. Hockey Lineup Manager’s Practice Planner uses a timeline for organizing the session.
2. Reusable drills
Keep a drill’s name, purpose, and teaching notes together. My Drills lets you reuse references in later practices instead of recreating the same entry each week. A descriptive name is easier to find than “video 12.”
3. Video and link references
Choose a short clip or link that shows the point you want to teach. Saving an external link does not make the linked video permanently available or guarantee that it will load without internet access. Check important references before leaving for the rink.
4. Photos and diagrams
A video is not always the clearest explanation. Attach a photo or a saved Whiteboard diagram when you need to show player starting positions, traffic patterns, or a station setup.
5. Notes that assistants can act on
Include the station owner, equipment needed, and one or two coaching cues. A drill title alone does not explain how your version should run or what you want the players to improve.
6. A usable export
Try a practice PDF on the device and printer your staff uses. Review image clarity and the order of segments. A paper or PDF reference can be useful when rink connectivity is unreliable.
7. A realistic sharing workflow
Check what the app’s selected sharing option includes. A PDF plan is not the same as sending all underlying video files. File sizes and the chosen service can affect media delivery, so test important plans before practice.
